House In Konkan
Konkan region in Maharashtra is known for its natural
beauty and subtropical climate. Proposed house is a
weekend retreat for a Mumbai based family.
The rectangular site located 350km south of Mumbai
experiences heavy rainfall with hot and dry summer
months. Thereby, the design for the house has been
influenced by local climate and surroundings.
Maximum attempt has been made to restrict the building
footprint as minimal as possible to ensure a spatial
Pitched roof with long projecting eaves has been provided
all around to shield the interiors from heavy rains and
harsh sun. Ample amount of cross‐ventilation provides
additional comfort to the users indoors.
Partly covered verandah acts as a semi outdoor space for
the house. Sloping roof coalesces the super structure and
thus merges it with surrounding environment.
Local material such as laterite stone has been used along
with concrete to minimize costs and make the house ecofriendly.
Native tree species have been selected for landscaping as
they do not incur excess water consumption and
